It is in southern Dutchess County and a good location if you need to be in NYC for business or to have fun.

So if you’ve been thinking about making a move to Fishkill NY or simply want to find out if Fishkill would be a good place to live, then this is definitely the video for you to watch. I’m going to cover everything you need to know about living in Fishkill, NY.

MOVING TO FISHKILL NY

I’m Carlin Felder, a licensed real estate agent with eXp Realty. I live in the Hudson Valley and help buyers and sellers just like you all the time. People reach out to me every week about moving here – whether it’s in 7 days or 7 months, if you’re interested in selling or buying a home in Fishkill NY give me a call – my contact info is down at the bottom of this post. I want to help make your next move to Fishkill, or anywhere in the HV, as easy as possible!

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT FISHKILL NY

When you’re in Fishkill you’ll find a really cute Main Street area with lots of restaurants that have some really nice outdoor seating so you can enjoy the beautiful Hudson Valley weather. It’s especially beautiful in the fall and the spring when the seasons are changing. And summers are pretty amazing! If you were to buy a home or rent an apartment in Fishkill NY I want to help you imagine living here. So I have a few topics to cover in the video:

  1. Where is Fishkill NY Located and What County if Fishkill NY In:

Fishkill NY is located at the junction of Interstate 84, Route 52, Route 9 and sits just east of the Hudson River in Dutchess County. It’s a great location for commuters who need to head south to Putnam or Westchester counties for work or if you need to get to Poughkeepsie or across the river to Orange, Ulster or even down to Rockland County or head down to northern NJ, Fishkill is a great location to be. You can access 84 via route 9 or route 52 easily.
  1. What are the Transportation Options in Fishkill

There are quite a few transportation options near Fishkill.  The closest airport to Fishkill is Stewart International Airport in Newburgh which is about 20 minutes to the west.

You can also drive to Westchester and fly out of the airport there or head to JFK, Laguardia or Newark Liberty and catch a plane within about an hour and a half – or just a little bit longer depending upon traffic.  A lot of people I know have been opting to use the local airports because they are just easier to use, especially if you’re flying to Florida – and you know how New Yorkers love to go to Florida! The closest train stations are the Beacon Station about 10 minutes away or the New Hamburg Station near Fishkill & Wappingers Falls. You can get to Grand Central in about an hour and a half from Beacon or New Hamburg depending upon whether you catch an express train or not.  This makes Fishkill a great place to live if you need to be in NYC for work or to go to a Yankees Game.

  1. What is the History of Fishkill NY:

Let’s jump into the history of Fishkill real quick.
    1. Fishkill as a town has a history which dates back to the 1600’s when the land where Fishkill sits was inhabited by the Lenape & Wappinger Native Americans who sold 85,000 acres to Dutch settlers for basically $1200 and some other items. The Dutch colonists who bought the land really only used it for farming. It wasn’t until their children built homes and churches in the area that Fishkill became a community of colonists and displaced native american indian tribes who had lived in this area of the Hudson River Valley for centuries.
    2. The name Fishkill is derived from two Dutch words: Vis (fish) and Kill (creek or stream). While it may sound weird, once you live around here, you get used to it.
    3. It’s also home to the historic Dutch Reformed Church which is on Main Street and near Route 9 and still has services to this day.
    4. Fishkill is famous for being a crossroads of the American Revolution and was home to the first post office in New York. And, in 1777, the first copies of New York State’s Constitution were printed on Samuel Loudon’s printing press in Fishkill. The 1800s brought manufacturing to the area and Fishkill became known for its woolen products.
    5. The town of Beacon – which used to be named Matteawan, used to be part of Fishkill, but it’s now surrounded by Fishkill as Fishkill runs along the mountain above Beacon and down toward Cold Spring. Fishkill also shares a zip code with Beacon,12508, in the Glenham area which is along Fishkill Creek just north of Beacon.

  1. What Parks & Points of Interest are in Fishkill:

Fishkill has a lot of parks so you can always get outside to play sports or hold large events under the pavilions at the parks. If you want to play soccer, softball or tennis, you’ll have access to parks like Sarah Taylor or Geering Park.

There’s a public driving range and a 12 hole golf course in Fishkill which is pretty nice to play. It does run alongside the highway for some of the holes, but overall it’s a pretty easy course and very convenient for hitting balls or getting in a partial round of golf.

If you like baseball, the NY Yankees Farm Team, the Renegades, is located in Fishkill/Wappingers Falls and has some amazing seats for great prices.

  1. What is Fishkill NY Like to Live in aka the Neighborhood Vibe:

What is the neighborhood vibe of Fishkill?
    1. Fishkill is a relaxed suburban environment with a very small but quaint Main Street.
    2. But mostly, the neighborhoods in Fishkill have traditional style homes like raised ranches or ranch homes with some older victorian or farmhouse style homes. There are a few large townhome areas and condo areas in Fishkill. So if you want to find an attached home that may be a little more affordable than a single family home, Fishkill has some options.
    3. Fishkill comprises the Village of Fishkill which does feature more of the older farmhouse style and victorian homes, but the town of Fishkill has a more suburban vibe and homes on expected sized lots or some with a little bit of acreage as well.

  1. What Grocery Stores & Major Retail Hubs are in Fishkill:

The downside of the Main Street in Fishkill is that it’s a thoroughfare for people wanting to connect with I-84 closer to the NB Beacon Bridge instead of taking Route 9 down toward the more centralized shopping area where you can find a Walmart & Home Depot. There’s a Shoprite on Route 9 and quite a few more grocery stores nearby like Adams FairAcre and Nature’s Pantry. It’s easy to get all your shopping done from Fishkill as it’s next door to Wappingers Falls where there are all the major retail stores and the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall.  If you like outlet shopping, you can head down to Woodbury Commons which is about 30 minutes away and attracts shoppers from around the globe who hit up the major brand stores and carry the more affordable stuff home in large suitcases. Woodbury is a pretty neat place to shop and has a pretty good food court. Maybe you’ve heard of Fishkill Farms. It’s a pretty cool farm stand near Fishkill but it’s in the town of Hopewell Junction, not Fishkill. It produces eco certified fruits and organic veggies, berries & eggs for farmer’s markets, CSA, U-pick and has a farm store. It’s not technically in Fishkill, but it’s a cool place to go nearby.
  1. Dining or Going Out in Fishkill:

If you want to go out to eat, you can find the usual chain restaurants like Five Guys, Chipotle, Starbucks, Panera, etc. There’s also Mexican food, Thai, Sushi, Winebars, Pubs, Dutchess Biercafe which is a local favorite, Greek and Indian food and the infamous Red Line Diner.  So there’s a lot of variety in dining for Fishkill. I recommend parking in the public lot behind Main Street and picking from one of the many local flavor places on Main Street or go out and get an ice cream at Fishkill Creamery when you’re in town looking at houses.

I like to use Niche to pull up some stats & screenshots for the neighborhoods I cover. I don’t go into too much detail due to fair housing laws, and I’m not steering anyone to a specific town. You can look up the stats yourself after watching this video to find out if Fishkill is the right place for you, and I also recommend calling the police department and local school administration to find out more about crime stats & local school rankings, etc. People should always research neighborhoods on their own and find out if an area is right for them.
